Designed
by Ralph Walker in 1930, The Western Union Building is one of the finest
examples of an Art Deco Skyscraper and has been designated a Historic
Landmark. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission gave
unanimous approval of the Master Plan for this telecommunications buildings'
need to adapt to today’s and tomorrows needs.
The Master Plan calls for a new transmitting
tower that enhances and announces the buildings use and design, a organized
pattern/matrix of windows and mechanical louvers to be designed within the existing
masonry openings that echoes its asymmetry, the restoration of the existing bronze
storefronts, and along several of the storefronts a deco inspired interpretation
of mechanical louvers.
